The North Carolina Folklife Institute (NC Folk) announces the opening of the photography exhibit Traditions of Resistance: Civil Rights Protests in North Carolina’s Lumbee Community. Offered in partnership with the North Carolina North Carolina Folklore Society, Rob Amberg, the Lumbee Tribe, Traditions of Resistance will be shown until June 30, 2017.

This exhibit is free and open to the public.

This collection of photographs, shot by Rob Amberg during a tumultuous period in Robeson County, North Carolina history, chronicles civil disobedience fueled by the troublesome deaths of community members and assassination of Julian T. Pierce, a candidate for Robeson County superior court judge. Mr. Amberg’s photographs offer a journalistic perspective of a community in turmoil. Amberg’s photographs are testament to the power of community in action, the strength of everyday citizens, the unity created when communities driven to confront injustice.

The Entrepreneurship Incubator is funded through partnership with the Thomas Family Center for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Technology Development Center. The Incubator is designed to handle the needs of small to mid-sized companies, from the “napkin” stage to established companies, with a focus on high growth companies that create jobs, and utilize local strengths. The incubation program is designed to embrace the diversity of our region and provide our start-up clients access to UNCP’s and the area’s resources and expertise. The North Carolina Folklife Institute is a statewide non-profit arts organization dedicated to promoting the preservation, appreciation and understanding of North Carolina’s folk culture. NC Folk accomplishes this through five directives: artist assistance, performance and exhibit presentation, community documentation, creative interpretation, and community education.
