Sarah Bryan

Sarah Bryan has been the North Carolina Folklife Institute’s Program Manager since 2007, and a fieldworker and writer for Institute projects since 2005. In her work at the Institute, she has done extensive research in the gospel, funk, and jazz traditions of Eastern North Carolina as part of the African American Heritage Music Project, and has worked with hundreds of traditional artists in North Carolina’s southern mountain counties for the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area Traditional Artists Directory. A graduate of UNC’s Curriculum in Folklore (MA, 2003) and a native of both Carolinas, Bryan regularly consults on the oral history and traditional music of the region. She is also the editor of the Old-Time Herald, a long-established magazine about string band music, and the author of Moon North Carolina, a major-market travel guide that highlights the state’s folklife-related destinations.
